How to Remove Dog Wee Stains and other uses for Oxalic Acid Crystals. Unsightly dark stains and spots on your wooden floor, doors or furniture? Who was the culprit? The kids over exuberant colouring? OXALIC ACID HAS A MYRIAD OF USES.
No fear we have a solution – Oxalic Acid Crystals. It can remove most dark stains and spots such as rust, ink, red wine and even dog urine stains from wood. Dark Spots, tannin stains & discolouration of a wood surface are usually caused by moisture and can be exacerbated when the moisture is contaminated with metal such as iron and steel (especially on Oak & Idigbo). It can be used to remove rust and stains from a variety of metal surfaces and other materials such as concrete. It’s even used for cleaning fibreglass boat decks and hulls, and can also be used for reversing the greying effects caused by the sun.
It’s widely used as a wood bleach as it removes stains without removing the natural colour of the wood, therefore it can be used on spots on furniture, like dark water marks, and it can be used to remove stains from larger areas of wood like floors and decks.
BEE KEEPERS USE IT TO DISINFECT THEIR BEE HIVES.
Interestingly Oxalic Acid Crystals are used by Bee Keepers to disinfect their bee hives, without harming the bees! Oxalic kills the Varroa bee mite, which has become a major contributor to the demise of bee colonies worldwide.
HOW TO USE OXALIC ACID
Although Oxalic acid is a naturally found in the leaves of rhubarb, it is toxic and should be used with care. Use eye protection, rubber gloves and protective clothing when using it. Ensure room is well ventilated. Dispose of unused Oxalic as per tub directions. However, if used properly, Oxalic acid is highly effective in renewing wood to a beautiful natural state.
REMOVING DRIED DOG URINE STAINS (OR ANY DARK STAIN IN THE WOOD)
To remove unsightly dark stains caused by dog urine or other liquids proceed with the following steps:
1. Sanding off the finish: Use an 80 to 100 grit Sanding Sheet to sand the finish. The stain might be removed without having to get any deeper into the wood. If the stain is still there see the next step.
2. Add the Oxalic Acid to warm water: Usually 75-100g of crystals to 1 litre of warm water. Using a sponge or towel cloth and let it stay for 5 minutes. Then wipe it up. You will have to experiment with the dilution strength and soak times.
3. Neutralise: Apply some baking soda to neutralize it and rinse with water. Dry the area and wait for it to dry completely before refinishing.
4. Refinish and staining: Removing stains from hardwood floor may leave the area looking different from the rest of the surface or damaging the finish. For that reason, you will be required to refinish and/or stain the area. Here is how it may be done:
a. Sand or buff the area with No.2 fine steel wool or soft grit sand paper
b. Vacuum and wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove the particles and let it dry completely
c. Apply your desired color of wood stain and let it dry before you apply a second coat
d. Finish by applying a clear top coat of wax or varnish.
